From the lacunose folios of Codex 359 to the diastematic adiastematic notations of the Hartker Antiphoner, the scriptorium of St. Gall quietly codified the melodic grammar that would carry the Roman Rite north of the Alps. This essay traces the lineage of the St. Gall neumes and argues that their interpretive conventions — not the later square notation of the Solesmes method — remain the most faithful witness to the Roman chant tradition as sung in the early Middle Ages.
