Football and Christian Witness: Herb Lusk II

There are some football players well known for kneeling in prayer or pointing to heaven after making a good play. I always felt this was a strong Christian witness and shows that these guys remember God even when out on the football field. But where did this start?

It started with Herb Lusk II, who was a running back for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was the first player to kneel in prayer after scoring a touchdown on October 9th, 1977. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a good article on him here (requires you to pay).

Mr.Lusk only played 3 years in the NFL and then quit to become a minister, which is quite the witness in itself. Thanks to him, we now have players who remember God and give Him credit every time they make a great play, which is about the best legacy one can leave.

I think this points back to each of us: what witness do you give in your profession? Do you forget God when you walk in the front door? Even if you don’t have the opportunity to talk to other about Jesus, you can still be a powerful witness in how you act: don’t use language, don’t talk bad about others, refuse to be unethical, and be kind and loving in everything. Herb Lusk not only calls football players to witness, he calls us to as well.

God bless,
Jay

I have listend to Dr. Dobson and Pastor Lusk the last two days and had my 3 and 4 year old listen today with me. After 4 years of struggles, I had felt utterly beat down. Almost afraid to stand as I had before all the struggles began. Even after God showing us some of the reasons and victories thru it all, I was just so low within myself. Little by little I have been 'standing back up' and becoming strong and faithful again. What the last two days of listening has done for me! Wow! My physical problems and all are tools for the Lord! Regardless fo what people do or attempt to do, I am ready, willing, and able to go 'one more round'!!! Or hundreds of more rounds-one at a time!
