The Democrats continue to fail miserably on one issue: Abortion. Why they can work so hard to save the environment and yet agree that babies should be murdered I can't understand.
The National Right to Life Committee has put together a great brochure that explains how each candidate stands on pro-life issues. I recommend you take the time to look at it, particularly if you are thinking of voting for a Democrat. It's a pdf file, so you can print it out and pass it around to others.
What's sad about the whole situation is the lack of any dissention on the issue. Most Americans are not in favor of partial-birth abortion, for example, yet not one Democratic candidate does not "Support" it. Why? You would think this would be a great place to pick up some votes (a pro-life, pro-poor, anti-war candidate would garner some support). Most oppose parental involvement by minors (this is insane) and all have said they will only support pro-abortion judges. This means no rational thinkers on the judicial bench, no legitimate Catholic judges, ultimately no justice - particularly for those who need it most.
How can the Democrats think the ability to murder the unborn is the best postion for America?

I keep having this argument over and over with friends, why canīt we have a por-life democrat run for office. I think it would be surprising the result!
mankind has failed altogether, the devil accuses us all for commiting one sin. abortion is a sin that falls under the catergory of murder. but murderers are forgiven so will the aborters, same sin two names.
In Canada, we have a similar situation. "Left-wing" parties oppose capital punishment, destruction of the environment, and warfare. They believe the state should alleviate the sufferings of the poor - yet they all support abortion.
The only parties with any kind of sympathy towards the pro-life movement are "far right-wing", refuse to devote tax dollars to the poor, have no concern for the environment, support capital punishment, and want to close immigration for non-white people (I'm of Asian descent).
I have often wondered why the "right-wing" shows less hostility towards the pro-life movement than the "left-wing". The answer which makes most sense to me unfortunately sometimes wants to make me cry: The "right-wing" views people (especially the poor) as things to be exploited while the "left-wing" views people (especially the poor) as a problematic drain on the their resources. With such views, one can see a "right-wing" person not being upset over the birth of more "poor unwanted babies" and a "left-wing" person being upset over yet another mouth to feed.
Upon reflection, however, I see these despicable tendencies in myself far too often. I often find myself showing no compassion towards the poor because they do nothing for me. I also remember being quite upset that the (unwed) mother of a foster child I was supporting was having lots of babies. I had fallen into the trap of viewing the family I was helping as an expense, of viewing the poor as a problem to be ignored or eradicated.
Blessed Mother Theresa, I understand, viewed the poor in quite a different light. She saw in them an opportunity not just to serve others, not just to serve the Lord, but to be blessed by them. She viewed her service not as a blessing to the poor but as an opportunity to partake in the blessing God has for the poor and an opportunity to meet the Lord.
Henry Nouen writes "blessed are the poor" yet we always read "blessed are those who care for the poor".
Perhaps our view of the poor, and human life in general may help explain the perplexing views of our political candidates and why the Pope says that in order for the pro-life movement to succeed, the world needs to be re-evangelized.

That is a wonderful sentiment, and one that we all need to animate in our own lives. Your take on right-wing vs. left-wing views on poverty does seem to explain a great deal in the politics of both sides (including socialist leanings of the left and the laissez-faire leanings of the right). Eradicate poverty or exploit it. It does rather seem that Mother Theresa elected to share in the poverty rather than eradicate or exploit it. By today's standards, Jesus and all of the apostles would have been either working in a sweatshop or coddled in their government apartments, suckling on their cable, and collecting welfare checks. Perhaps we should all pray for the courage to willingly join in the poverty and sufferings of Christ.

I have come to the conclusion that the Democratic Party has become the Abortion Party and almost all the national Democratic office holders, along with their party, are the political leaders of the abortion movement or industry and also of the culture of death in the United States. Although I mostly agree with the Democrats, their support for the killing of the unborn outweighs all the good they try to do. If Al Gore has stuck with his once held pro-life views, he would be the President of the U.S. today. It seems that the Democrats have sold out, some might say sold their soul, to the abortion industry. Bill
