The Birth Control Pill and Abortion
I have a question for protestants. How can you say the birth control pill is fine, but abortion is not? Here's why I'm asking:
The birth control pill can act as an abortifacient. This means that the birth control pill can and does induce abortion after conception in some cases. The birth control pill manufacturers agree with this statement and it's typically printed with literature on the pill and how it works. The only discrepancy is how often this happens: some pro-life groups suggest it happens often while the pill manufacturers say it is infrequent.
Still, if you condemn abortion, don't you have to condemn the pill? For those of you who don't know, every Christian church condemned any form of birth control before the 1930's. In the 1930's one protestant denomination after another began approving contraception for use by parishioners (this is very similar to the way homosexuality is being accepted by some churches now - in fact, the Anglican church was the first to allow contraception).
But I still don't understand how the pill can be approved. Let me know if you have any insights.
God bless,
Jay

Some of your material appears like it is coming from Janet Smith, is this true?

Posted by: Richard Wan at December 1, 2003 03:19 PMActually, Richard, I hadn't seen that, but thanks for pointing it out. I read the information on several well-known birth control pills in the Physician's Desk Reference. Note: the online version requires a subscription, but you can usually find the book at your local library.
The PDR discusses the three opportunities for the pill to prevent birth and the third is as an abortifacient. At this point, most pill manufacturers include the information in their literature. For example, Ortho Cept, which is the most widely used pill, has their product information here. They clearly state that it prevents implantation, which is after conception.

Posted by: Jay at December 1, 2003 05:08 PMI made a posting in August entitled Birth Control-who needs it where I explained my journey into full knowledge of the pill and it's spiritual (as well as physical) ramifications. I think a lot of women take the pill not even realizing it's risks, not knowing how it works. It is so easy in today's society to get drawn into the conveniences of life without even knowing what you're jumping into. However, ignorance is not bliss.
I am shameful of the years I took the pill, trusting my doctors that it was safe, never questioning it's moral consequences. Are the christian women who are taking the pill now, like I was, unaware of what they are pumping into their bodies (which I highly recommend NOT doing)? Or are they ignoring the facts? I agree with you, Jay, in that we cannot condemn abortion and support the pill. The two go hand in hand.
The abortifacient material in the birth control pill is found in almost every form of it. Only the very low dosage pills do not have the ingredients and those have a very low effective rate at preventing pregnancy. Women who take those pills usually take them for other reasons than pregnancy related such as to regulate menstral cycles or for dermalogical purposes. The pill may be a quick fix to some of these problems but a woman has to take the pill for continued success. Proper nutrition, vitamin supplements and exercise can heal such ailments... but who wants to take CARE of the temple God gave them when you can just pop a pill? I recomend to anyone interested in alternative methods to research this topic.
Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition is a good book to start with.

Great comment Jay. When my wife and I were engaged we attended a NFP class with a lady and her husband in the area who taught it. They gave us a lot of material, but one piece that shook me to my foundations in realizing the evilness of artificial contraception was Janet Smith's "Abortion: Why not" tape. If you haven't listened to it, you should. And if you have, do it again. She mentions the facts that you do and a whole lot more.
If you're looking for a cogent, intelligent way to explain why this practice is wrong on so many levels, get a tape....or even better pass them out.
Here is a transcript of the talk.

Just wanted to mention two things:
1. I met a woman at a Natural Family Planning conference who used to be Protestant and converted when learning about the abortifacient properties of the Pill. In fact, she and her husband learned about it at a pro-life conference when it was mentioned quite casually. The information devastated them - sometimes I wonder if we need to exercise more sensitivity in this area.
2. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology defines conception (and the beginning of pregnancy) as the implantation of a fertilized egg to the uterus. Under this (twisted yet official) definition, the pill is not an abortifacient as "conception/pregnancy" has not yet begun. Same goes for the "morning-after" pill, IUD, Depo-prevera, Norplant. Promoters of these technologies deny that their product is abortifacient but they will freely admit that it prevents the "nitidation" of a zygote. Personally, I think people are playing word games.

I agree with you that the The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology is twisted, in fact they redefined this after the introduction of the pill so as to be able to say that it was not an abortifacient. They knew that the market wouldn't be as receptive to a birth control device that actually killed the baby. The problem with their decision to redefine the moment of conception was that in its very nature it wasn't scientific nor factual.
The very word "begin" literally means to take rise, or to do the first act, to commence, so by their very definition they have manipulated our language to fit their designs.
Let's look at it scientifically. If it is the pill's thinning the lining of the uterus that prevents the "fertilized egg" from implanting how is this not affecting the actual preganancy? The beginning of the act of pregnancy is the fertilization of the egg. Therefore, the thinning of the uterus, by taking the pill, causes an abortive effect.
Definitions like this are a play on words and are twisted. That's why it is so important that we stay informed. Thanks for participating Richard and for knowing your facts on this important issue. Your involvement here is most welcome.
In Christ,
Joe
I've finally added another article exploring the Biblical argument against contraception.

Congrats on the arrival of your new bundle of joy. When Tom and I got married we said we would wait three years before having children. We decided to take the pill not knowing that there were other methods for birth control out there. I was always feeling sick and just not right on the pill. We decided a few months into our marriage to stop using the pill. I felt much better and vowed never to use it again. Unfortunally this left us in a bind. We still didn't want to start a family yet but what were we supposed to do. A few months after we stopped using the pill God led us to a few people that really challenged us as to why we were waiting to start a family. It became obvious to us that our reasoning was selfish so we just decided to leave it in Gods hands. A month later we conceived our first son. We found out I was expecting just weeks shy of our one year ann. During my pregnancy again God brought into our lives some wonderful friends. One family were just getting ready to have their fifth child. During many converstaions she mentioned that the pill caused abortions. I didn't really believe her, so I started doing my own research. Once I found out the truth I came running into Tom's arms crying. What had we done, had we unknowingly aborted a baby. I couldn't believe that no one had told me about the effects of the pill to a baby as well as to me. Seventeen months later we delived our second son to be followed nineteen months later by our third son. We are excited to see who God was planned for our family next. I now take every opportunity to tell anyone I can about the pill. The comments and arguments that I have faced vary. One argument is when is a baby considered a baby. This argument holds no ground in my mind. The moment an egg is fertilized it is a baby. Any other belief is for convenience only. Another is "I have endometreosis" Sorry about spelling. "So I have to take the pill". More than anything else though is that women are not being told the facts because many the doctors don't even know. Or that studies show that the percent of an abortion actually happening is so low that women don't need to worry about it. I am sorry but even if it's a .5% chance I want to know. We are living in a time where so many lies are being told. So many people are trusting doctors and the government when they need to do their own research. Look at all the drugs out there that are suppoesed to be helpful to us, then read all the side effects that you don't hear about. It's the same with the pill. The drug companies want you to buy their stuff, they hide what they don't want you to know in the fine print. It is amazing how the world can get it's sticky fingers woven into our lives without us even knowing it. Today and yesterday people are basing their lives by worldly standards. Example: We can only have two children because we can't aford to send anymore through college, or because we don't want to drive a mini van much less a conversion van, heaven forbid! Wake up people your missing out on so much joy. Ok I'll get off my soap box now =)
Living everyday to glorify God,
Kristie
